A couple of days after Chinese Independence Day was another holiday called Mid-Autumn Festival, which is kind of like our Thanksgiving Day. It is celebrated on the full moon, and everyone eats little round cakes called moon cakes.

We personally don’t like them very much because they are not very sweet. When we think of cake, we think sweet, but that’s not necessarily the case here. We got showered with moon cakes! Our students just love them! They were being sold on every street corner everywhere you went.

Our teaching schedule was quite interesting last week. Last Monday and Tuesday we didn’t have to teach because we had graduation (they do it at the beginning of the year, not the end) and we also had the 10th anniversary celebration of our school. On Monday night, the students put on a big show for the teachers and for the freshmen.

Many of our former students were in the show, and it was fun to see them sing and dance and do crazy things. I loved all of the costumes and Chinese dances. They had quite a variety. There was a magic show, Kung Fu, a fashion show, musical instruments, etc. They did a really good job. Since we had Monday and Tuesday off, we had to teach all weekend, which was quite a change. But we survived and are now on vacation, so we can’t complain too much!

One of my former students took us out to dinner last week to a really nice restaurant, where Rick was able to get a steak that he said tasted like home. That doesn’t always happen here, so he enjoyed every bite.

She wants to teach me Chinese, and I really want to continue to learn it, so now I just need to figure out where to fit it into my schedule. I really want to continue to build a relationship with her, and I think meeting once a week would be great. She is such a sweet girl.
